If you haven’t heard about Kodaline before, you’ve probably heard their song `Follow Your Fire’ at the radio for so many times. They have conquered our hearts with their sound, and now you can find them in Kiss Top 40! We talked to Kodaline about their new album `Politics of living’, their first visit in Romania and their collaboration with Kygo.
Follow Your Fire" is really popular in Romania right now! The song reached no.18 on Kiss Top 40! Have you expected this succes in this part of Europe?
We never really expect any of our success, it's crazy that after 5 years of touring and releasing music now we have a fan base in Romania. It's a beautiful country and we can't wait to get back.
You played in Bucharest two months ago. What was your first impression about Romania?
Very hot!! We're not used to that kind of heat in Ireland. Had an hour or two to soak in the sun before we played our show. The people are very kind also.
You've just released your third album – Politics of Living. Your earlier stuff is folkier and now you surprised us by taking this electronic route. Why?
I think it's very important for a band to experiment with their sound and songwriting. We're very open to change and we love trying new things. I think we're just always curious.
Steve said that "the whole album is about reminiscing, about family, friends and being kids". When was the last time you acted childishly or felt like a teenager again?
We're always childish. I think I'd have trouble trying to remember the last time I acted like an adult. I think having a good sense of humour is necessary when being a member of a touring band.
We take the studio very seriously but once we're on tour it's good to relax and enjoy oneself.
I think "Angel" is the saddest song from your new album. What's the story behind it? Did you write it for someone?
Yes, the song was written about a girl who tragically lost her life at one of our concerts. It had a huge affect on the 4 of us. So we pulled together and wrote that song for her Family. They loved it and gave us their blessing to put it on our album.

You released "Raging" with Kygo, two years ago. Who made the first call for this collaboration?
I'm not entirely sure how it started. He's such a humble dude, Steve has toured with him quite a few times. They've become good friends. It was huge for us and we've since added it to our own set.
Guys, your music has been used in some popular TV shows like The Vampire Diaries and Grey's Anatomy. Do you have time for TV shows? Which one is your favorite?
Yeah we love watching shows, we're all into different things. It's really strange when we hear our music in a TV show. It's quite a surreal feeling. My favourite show is Rick and Morty, which I'm now watching again for the 3rd time.
Mark and Steve, I know you are really good friends since childhood. What's the craziest memory you have together?
I often think back to the earlier shows we used to play when we were much younger. Entering battle of the bands competitions and pretending we were older than we were so we could play at our local pub. I remember we were playing for about 2,000 students at a young scientist awards exhibition. 2 of us thought we were playing one song and the other 2 thought we were playing another, it was a car crash but very funny now when we look back on it.
How often do you go to concerts where you are not on the guest list?
Great question! Not often enough. I saw a traditional Irish band called the gloaming last year in Dublin and my friend gave me the ticket. It was one of the best shows I've been to.
